Ukraine is working on developing new mines that will use artificial intelligence to “decide” who to detonate. This was announced in Odesa during the Black Sea Security Forum by the acting Minister of Digital Transformation, Oleksandr Bornyakov.

Key Points:

  • Ukraine is actively developing new mines with artificial intelligence, which will automatically identify potential threats and make decisions regarding the activation of the explosive device.
  • New generation intelligent mines will be capable of identifying different categories of individuals, determining whether the explosive device should be triggered based on the person’s characteristics.

Mines with Artificial Intelligence: A New Development from Ukraine

According to him, the Ministry of Digital Transformation is working on creating next-generation mines that will integrate artificial intelligence. The plan is for this AI to automatically determine who is approaching the mine and whether the explosive device should be activated.

As the official noted, the AI will be responsible for the process of targeting – the identification will not be limited to a “friend or foe” level. It will determine who exactly is approaching the device – a child, an adult, a civilian, a soldier, or an armed individual, and so on.

For instance, if the artificial intelligence detects someone walking on a minefield, and this person is shorter than 1 meter, the mine will not detonate because the AI understands it’s a child. Alternatively, if the body armor has “UN” written on it, the mine will also not activate. Or, if the person is not carrying anything metallic – it also won’t trigger, according to the AI’s assessment… I believe this could operate autonomously.
