Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Great Britain, General Rolli Walker, stated that he made a mistake when he underestimated the effectiveness of artificial intelligence in the military.

Key takeaways:

  • This concerns ASGARD: a digital combat management system.
  • It speeds up operations planning by more than 70 times.

AI can do more than previously thought

The focus is on a new AI-based system called ASGARD.

Crucially, it has reduced the corps-level military planning cycle from 72 hours to just one hour.

General Rolli Walker frankly admitted that he did not expect such an impressive level of effectiveness from AI at all.

Until now, the head of the British General Staff believed that the system would allow the army to make decisions twice as fast, but the actual result surpassed predictions.

I was mistaken… The corps-level planning cycle, which previously took 72 hours, can now be completed in just one. What they will do with the other 71 hours, I don’t know,” Rolli Walker jokingly remarked.

It is also worth noting that ASGARD is a digital combat management system that collects and processes battlefield information, assisting commanders in identifying targets, making decisions, and coordinating strikes.

Recently, official London announced its intention to invest approximately £1 billion in the development of such systems.
