Про це повідомив an EU official, speaking anonymously to Ukrinform’s correspondent in Brussels, following the conclusion of debates at the European Council meeting concerning Ukraine.

“President of the European Council Charles Michel emphasized the need to ‘be confident in our actions to support Ukraine and be ready to take responsibility if and when conditions are conducive to engaging with Russia to help secure a just and lasting peace that also protects Europe’s interests’, he noted.

The official pointed out that this is precisely what President Zelenskyy has asked the European Union for – for Europe to play a more active role in diplomatic efforts.

“The most important thing is for Europeans to remain coordinated on how to engage with Russia and what the EU’s stance should be”, the official explained. “And President Michel’s role is to ensure EU unity”.

The source also indicated that several leaders made it clear that, in accordance with the EU Treaties, the President of the European Council is the “natural representative of the European Union’s interests”.

Regarding recent brief diplomatic contacts with the Kremlin, the President explained that he had asked his office to open a diplomatic channel with Russia. The objective was to be prepared to defend the EU’s interests when the right moment arrives. These involve short exchanges without substantive discussion or negotiations – diplomats are carrying out their diplomatic work.

As Ukrinform reported, the two-day European Council meeting began yesterday. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was present at the beginning of the discussions on Ukraine-related issues, after which the debates continued among the 27 member state leaders.
